Arlington Hymns by Brian Blume is a deeply moving mallet quartet arrangement of four beloved hymns, inspired by the solemn ceremonies held at Arlington National Cemetery. These hymns are regularly performed by Blume and fellow members of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” ceremonial band as part of their tribute to the men and women who have served our nation.

Scored for two vibraphones, two marimbas, glockenspiel, and crotales, the arrangement weaves together the following traditional hymns—Shenandoah (traditional spiritual), Be Still My Soul (Jean Sibelius), Amazing Grace (traditional English tune), and Goin’ Home (Antonín Dvořák). Blume’s writing blends warm resonance and expressive phrasing into a soundscape that feels both intimate and dignified. Attentive listeners may also notice quietly interwoven echoes of the traditional bugle call Taps.

Successful performances of Arlington Hymns rely on close ensemble communication and a shared sensitivity to pacing, balance, and color. The result is a powerful musical tribute and profound respect for those who have given their lives in service.
