Written to depict the Camino de Santiago, a 600-mile pilgrimage on foot through western Europe, The Camino by Michael Charles Smith is an intermediate marimba solo that captures the wistful nature of this amazing journey. Perpetuated by a relentless 16-note motive in 7/8 time, the piece requires an evenness in touch and tone from the performer so the melody speaks clearly without interrupting the underlying 16th-notes. This is a great piece for any developing performer looking to expand on their 4-mallet technique.

This piece ships as a fully bound score or as an instant PDF download for printing or tablet viewing.

  1. Brian Elizondo

“The Camino” is an exciting work for an intermediate marimbist. The entire piece is built upon a repeated, driving 7/16 pattern that requires the performer to have good control with a variety of strokes. It is short in both duration (31⁄2 minutes) and score length (53 measures, with many repeats). As a result, this could work well as an etude for students who aren’t yet comfortable with double lateral or single alternating strokes, quick interval changes, or playing in odd meters. Beyond those techniques, the constant repeated rhythms provide opportunities for students to work on phrasing.

The piece is tonal and likely to please most audiences, so it would work well to round out an intermediate percussionist’s recital program. If you’re looking for a short multipurpose work for marimba, check this out.
