Written for five drums in “overture” form, Overture for Timpani by Kirk J. Gay is an exciting recital piece to showcase the technique and musicianship of the timpanist. With a dramatic and lyrical opening, the overture bursts into its main “allegro” theme which leads to melodic, energetic, and technical phrases requiring various pedalings and cross-over stickings.
Overture for Timpani is currently on the group 1 solo list for the Florida Bandmasters Association.
