Darrien Spicak

Darrien Spicak (b. 1995) is a music educator, performer, and composer who is currently the General Music Education teacher at Star International Academy in Canton, MI. He currently holds a Master’s Degree in Percussion Performance from Texas Christian University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Michigan State University.

Darrien began composing by assisting his professor, Dr. Weber, with arranging marching percussion for MSU halftime shows. This culminated in Darrien designing an indoor percussion ensemble which won first place in the 2019 Taiwan World Percussion Championships in Taipei, Taiwan. While studying performance at TCU, he began taking composition lessons with Dr. Martin Blessinger, which gave him the avenue to pursue more concert-oriented percussion ensembles.

In the marching arts, Darrien performed with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps and the Matrix World Percussion Ensemble. Since 2019, he has been a bass drum instructor for the Legends Drum and Bugle Corps, receiving the high percussion award at the 2019 DCI Open Class Championships. In 2024, Darrien returned to Matrix Performing Arts to serve as a full battery technician for the Open and World Ensembles. In addition to these experiences, Darrien has begun arranging marching percussion in various capacities for different high school percussion programs.

Darrien is constantly inspired by cinematic soundtracks and seeks to replicate these powerful and emotional timbres and textures in his own musical works.
