John Paul Chapman (b. 1975) is Director of Percussion for the Ozark District in Missouri. He previously spent 15 years as Percussion Director in Willard, Missouri. During this time, the program spawned several of the new generation of percussion educators. He holds a Master’s degree in Composition from Missouri State University and is a former member of Nite Express and Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps.
He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition & Theory from Missouri State University. For over a decade, he has composed original scores, arrangements, and electronic designs for numerous marching bands in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Florida, as well as wind ensemble and percussion ensemble works.
His performance experience includes the 1995 Nite Express Drum & Bugle Corps and the 1996 Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps. He is a member of ASCAP and owner of Pesky Human Publishing, through which he releases albums of original music. Areas of musical focus include incorporation of timbre combinations from a far-side listening perspective. Influences include Radiohead, Sigur Rós, and Flaming Lips.
Combining elements of blues, jazz, & contemporary music, this piece uses various materials to depict the construction of a skyscraper.
