Gary Fieldman

Percussionist and composer Gary Fieldman (b. 1959) defined his musical sensibility early on with his interest in the jazz and European classical music traditions. He has performed frequently in the percussion sections of the Portland (ME) Symphony Orchestra and Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra, and is a performer, composer, and founding member of the chamber ensemble Know Orchestra.

As an ensemble leader, Gary has recorded Field Effect: The Gary Fieldman Quartet and Grasp The Swallow’s Tail. He has also released, on label Bodily Press, the solo percussion recording Mom’s Clock, exploring his synesthetic sense with sound metaphors associating light, timbre, and musical color.

Gary credits among his most influential teachers: Warren Myers, Tom Gauger, Fred Hinger, Buster Bailey, Bob Moses, Gary Chester, and Karen Tarlow. For several decades, he taught in the Prep and Continuing Education Divisions of the New England Conservatory of Music.
