Christopher Retschulte (b. 1972) is the Director of Percussion at Rock Hill High School in Frisco, Texas. He oversees the percussion program at the high school and the two feeder middle schools with the help of Alejandro Alvariño and Jake Coon.
Chris holds a Master’s Degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Massachusetts, where he was the teaching assistant to Thom Hannum, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Kentucky University. He has studied and taught with some of the best in the business, including Thom Hannum, Rob James, Jim Ancona, Jim Casella, Murray Gusseck, Ralph Hardimon, Steve Ulicny, and Glen Crosby.
A member of the front ensemble of the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993, he has gone on to instruct numerous drum corps including Star of Indiana Brass Theater, The Troopers, Boston Crusaders, The Cadets, The Blue Knights, The Santa Clara Vanguard, The Academy Drum, and the Madison Scouts. Additionally, he has been on staff with the University of Massachusetts Percussion Department, the University of Massachusetts Marching Band, and Thom Hannum’s Mobile Percussion Seminar.
For the past 15 years, Chris has been the percussion arranger for Shijonawate Gauken High School in Osaka, Japan. This group is consistently a finalist in the All-Japan competition, winning numerous percussion trophies in his tenure.
Chris holds multiple DCI High-Percussion trophies, WGI gold medals, a Bands of America Grand National Championship, over a dozen BOA Regional Titles, two Percussive Arts Society Showcase concerts, and several of his students have received All-State Percussion honors. As such, he is highly sought after as an educator, arranger, and consultant.
Chris is an active composer/arranger and an endorser of Pearl/Adams, Remo drumheads, Zildjian cymbals, and Vic Firth sticks and mallets.
Chris currently lives in Celina with his wife, Andi, daughter, Lyric, their two dogs, Charlie and Chase, cat, Rose, and a partridge in a pear tree.
